I learned a new term this weekend, thanks to Jdate.
Lay Date (lā dāt): Jdate, an online dating service, used by individuals generally over thirty to meet other jdate users for the sole purpose of having random sex.
While I was browsing profiles on Jdate this weekend (which is about all I can do right now since I haven’t paid for the site), I received a request to start an instant message (im) conversation. Before accepting the request, I promptly viewed his profile. Judging by his photos, this guy was cute and his profile said that he was a gainfully employed professional, well educated, had many diverse interests and was an all around stand up guy. I accepted his im request and we started “chatting”. He made some slightly sexual innuendos, but I, for the most part, decided to ignore these since they really were very harmless. On the im screen, there is typically a picture (taken from the profile) of the person that you are chatting with. All of a sudden, I noticed that the picture of the guy I was chatting with was no longer there and the image was replaced by a static image of an empty grey couch. I naively remarked to the guy that I was chatting with that it was really weird because his image had been replaced by a grey couch! Well… it soon came out that they guy had turned on his video camera and was hoping to have a little video sex – or whatever one would call it. I have to say, I was horrified! This is when he explained to me what he and his friends used jdate (or rather, lay date) for. They arent’t looking for romance, love, or even a fun date. Instead, they are using this site strictly to get laid. As an escort service. He did tell me, he and his friends had had decent luck finding just that on lay date and that for people over 30, jdate was really just a huge meat market of Jews looking for random sex. So much for my innocent romantic ideas! The “chat” ended with him running naked across the screen before I had time to get out of the im chat window.
Not only am I completely grossed out by this guy, but now I am really becoming very skeptical about J – er – Lay Date. Since I am over 30, are the Lay Daters the only guys I can hope to meet on Jdate? I’m very happy I haven’t spent the $30 bucks per month on this. After all, all I am looking for are a few fun (and innocent) dates and perhaps if I am extremely lucky, to meet “the one” (or at least someone that I can stand for a little while).
Jdate – a success or horror story? So far, it’s all horror!
